Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour Overview

The Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour is a 16 days journey through Nepal and Tibet that takes you to the northern face of Mount Kailash, one of the most sacred mountains in the world. Instead of walking the full 52 km Kailash Kora, this tour allows you to trek directly to the base of the mountain from Dirapuk Monastery and touch the holy ground known as Charan Sparsh.

The trip starts in Kathmandu, where you will visit major spiritual sites like Pashupatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square while your Tibet visa and permits are processed. From there, the tour continues by road through Kerung into Tibet.

Along the route, you will stay in key towns like Saga and Darchen, with a special stop at Lake Manasarovar for rest and acclimatization. The main highlight is a short, high-altitude trek from Dirapuk to the Charan Sparsh point, the closest spot anyone is allowed to reach Mount Kailash.

This trek is physically demanding due to the high altitude (over 5,000 meters) and rocky terrain, but it's much shorter and more direct than the full Kora. It’s suitable for those with moderate fitness who are looking for a meaningful yet manageable experience.

The tour ends by retracing the same route back to Kathmandu. With cultural sightseeing, scenic drives, and a powerful mountain experience, the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour is a perfect choice for pilgrims who want to be close to Kailash without taking on the full Kora trek.

What is the spiritual significance of Charan Sparsh at Mount Kailash?

Charan Sparsh means “touching the feet”, and in this tour, it refers to the rare chance to physically reach and touch the base of Mount Kailash. This point lies just beyond Dirapuk Monastery and is not part of the regular Kora route.

In many belief systems, including Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism, Mount Kailash is considered the home of Lord Shiva or the center of the universe. Touching its base is seen as a powerful act of devotion, and the closest any human can get, since climbing the mountain is strictly forbidden.

The trail to Charan Sparsh is short but steep and rocky, located at an altitude of over 5,000 meters. It’s a difficult but incredible opportunity for those who want a more personal and direct connection with the mountain even without doing the full 3 days Kora.

How is the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour Different from the Regular Kailash Kora?

While both the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour and the Regular Kailash Kora are sacred journeys, they offer different types of spiritual experiences.

The regular Kailash Kora (parikrama) involves a full circling of Mount Kailash, covering approximately 52 kilometers. It is a test of physical endurance, resilience, and spiritual devotion, symbolizing the release of past burdens and the renewal of one’s spirit. Completing the full Kora is highly meritorious but requires significant stamina due to the high altitude and challenging terrain.

The Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour, on the other hand, focuses on reaching the Charan Sparsh point, the sacred base of Mount Kailash. Instead of walking the entire circuit, pilgrims trek to the foot of the mountain to physically and spiritually connect with it.

This journey is less about endurance and more about intimacy with the divine. Pilgrims bow at the base of Mount Kailash, offering prayers and receiving blessings directly. The experience is deeply personal, centered on surrender, grace, and heartfelt connection rather than physical achievement.

We also offer a 15 days Kailash Mansarovar Yatra package, so feel free to check it out.

What Can You Expect from the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour?

The Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour is more than just a trip, it is a spiritual journey filled with faith, simplicity, and self-reflection. Over 16 days, you will travel through holy places and visit important sites for both Hindu and Buddhist followers. Starting from the cultural city of Kathmandu to the quiet mountains of Tibet, each part of the journey holds special meaning.

  • Kathmandu is the starting point of the 16 day Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour. After your arrival, you will visit several sacred and cultural sites including Pashupatinath Temple, Bouddhanath Stupa, and Kailashnath Mahadev, before heading towards the Tibet border at Kerung.
  • After crossing into Tibet via Kerung, the journey continues through towns like Saga and Darchen, with a stay at Lake Manasarovar for rest and altitude adjustment. This peaceful lake is considered sacred and many pilgrims take part in simple water rituals here.
  • The main part of the tour is a trek from Dirapuk Monastery to the Charan Sparsh point, which brings you right to the base of Mount Kailash. The path is physically challenging due to thin air and rocky trails, but the experience is short and focused, making it possible for most healthy travelers.
  • Expect basic but clean accommodations, meals, support from experienced guides, and medical backup along the way. The tour ends by following the same route back to Kathmandu.

How Difficult is the Kailash Charan Sparsh Trek?

The trek to Charan Sparsh is short but physically demanding because of the high altitude and rocky path. You will be walking at elevations above 5,000 meters, where the air is very thin and even short distances feel harder than usual.

The trail is steep, uneven, and not well-marked, so you need to move slowly and take regular breaks. Even people who are fit can feel tired quickly at this height.

Unlike the full Kailash Kora, this trek is completed in one day, as you will go from Dirapuk Monastery to Charan Sparsh point and back. Though it is shorter, you should still be physically prepared, drink lots of water, and stay mentally strong.

If needed, yaks or ponies can help carry your bags or assist you along the way. Oxygen and basic medical support are also available with the team.

In short, the Charan Sparsh trek is challenging because of altitude, not because of distance, but with steady walking and the right support, most travelers are able to complete it safely.

Best Time for the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour

The best time to undertake the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour is between May and September, when the weather in the region is most stable. During these months, temperatures are relatively moderate, skies are generally clearer, and the trekking routes remain accessible.

In May and June, the landscape is fresh from spring, with lingering snow on the mountain peaks and crisp mountain air. July and August bring warmer conditions but also the possibility of rainfall, so waterproof gear is recommended. September is ideal for those who prefer fewer crowds and cool, dry weather, with clear views of Mount Kailash.

Planning your tour within this window ensures safer travel, easier acclimatization, and a more comfortable overall experience at high altitude.

Modes of Transportation Used During the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour

The tour involves a combination of overland travel and trekking. Long-distance travel across Nepal and Tibet is done in private jeeps or buses, depending on group size. These vehicles are selected for comfort and are well-suited for rough mountain roads and high-altitude terrain.

Once you reach closer to Mount Kailash, vehicles can go as far as Yam Dwar or Dirapuk Monastery, depending on the final route. From there, the journey continues on foot to the Charan Sparsh point, the base of Mount Kailash.

For those who need assistance during the trek, yaks or ponies can be arranged to carry belongings or even to ride, helping ensure that travelers of varying fitness levels can complete the journey comfortably.

Accommodation Options Available During the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour

Accommodation throughout the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour is basic but comfortable enough, reflecting the remote locations and limited infrastructure in the region. The lodging is arranged in simple guesthouses, lodges, or shared dormitory-style accommodations, depending on the stop. While luxury is not available, the focus is on providing warmth, safety, and rest for pilgrims on a physically demanding route.

Kathmandu (Days 1–4 and Day 15)

You will stay in a 3-star category hotel in Kathmandu, offering clean rooms with attached bathrooms, hot showers, free Wi-Fi, and standard meals (usually breakfast is included). This is the most comfortable stay of the tour and provides a chance to relax and prepare before entering Tibet.

    Kerung (Day 5 & Day 14)

Kerung is the entry point into Tibet from Nepal. Accommodation here is in basic guesthouses or local hotels. Rooms may have attached or shared bathrooms, and electricity is available, though occasionally unstable. Hot water may not be consistent, and heating options are limited.

    Saga (Day 6 & Day 13)

Saga is a larger town with slightly better facilities. You will stay in simple lodges or guesthouses with basic rooms (often twin-sharing), blankets, and limited hot water. Some places offer en suite bathrooms, but not all. Electricity and phone charging points are available, and meals are usually served at the lodge restaurant.

    Lake Manasarovar (Days 7 & 8)

Accommodation at Manasarovar is often the simplest on the tour. You will stay in mud-built lodges or pre-fab guesthouses with shared rooms and communal bathrooms. There is usually no hot water or heating. The location, however, is stunning, and pilgrims stay here mainly for the view and the chance to perform rituals by the lake.

    Darchen (Day 9 & Day 12)

Darchen is the base town for all Mount Kailash pilgrims. Accommodation here is in basic hotels or guesthouses that offer clean beds, warm blankets, shared or private bathrooms (varies), and a dining hall. It is also one of the last points where phone signal and internet may be available.

    Dirapuk (Days 10 & 11)

Dirapuk is located near the north face of Mount Kailash and is the closest point to Charan Sparsh. Accommodation here is in dormitory-style mud houses or fixed lodges. Rooms are shared among 4–6 people, and facilities are very minimal with no hot water, no private toilets, and limited lighting. Blankets are provided, but sleeping bags are highly recommended for extra warmth.

Permits and Travel Documents Required for the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour

Several official documents and permits are required to complete the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour:

    • Chinese Group Visa (processed in Kathmandu as part of a group)

    • Tibet Travel Permit (mandatory for entry into Tibet)

    • Alien Travel Permit and Restricted Area Permit (for regions like Mount Kailash and Manasarovar)

All permits are arranged by the tour operator. Pilgrims must carry a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity, and provide required documents in advance to ensure smooth processing. These permits are essential for legal entry and travel within Tibet and will be checked during multiple points along the route.

Special Pujas and Rituals Performed During the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour

The Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour includes moments for personal and group rituals along the way. Many pilgrims perform a holy bath at Lake Manasarovar, which is believed to cleanse past karmas and prepare the mind for the pilgrimage ahead.

At Yam Dwar, known as the “Gateway to the Lord of Death”, pilgrims offer prayers for a safe and protected journey. Upon reaching Charan Sparsh, many perform private prayers or chant mantras at the foot of Mount Kailash, a place considered the closest physical point one can reach.

These practices are not mandatory but are commonly observed and supported throughout the tour, allowing each traveler to engage at their own comfort level.

Requirement of Travel Insurance for Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour

Travel insurance is mandatory for all participants joining the Kailash Charan Sparsh Tour. The policy should cover:

    • High-altitude trekking
    • Emergency evacuation (land/air)
    • Medical treatment and hospitalization
    • Trip cancellations, delays, or baggage loss

Due to the remote and high-altitude locations on this journey, having insurance is a critical safety measure. Tour operators may request a copy of your insurance policy during documentation or before crossing the border. If you need help selecting a suitable plan, the organizing team can assist with recommendations.
