Gorepani Poonhill Trek Overview

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short treks in Nepal. It offers an easy yet incredibly rewarding experience for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas without spending weeks on the trail. In just a few days, this trek takes you deep into the Annapurna region, blending stunning mountain views with rich local culture.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, where you can explore the city’s temples and busy streets before heading to Pokhara, a peaceful lakeside town. From there, a short drive to Kande marks the starting point of the trek. As you begin walking, you will pass through quiet forests and charming villages, reaching places like Australian Camp, Landruk, and Jhinu Danda, where you can unwind in natural hot springs by the river.

As you continue, you will trek through villages like Chhomrong, Tadapani, and finally Ghorepani, each one offering warm hospitality, traditional teahouses, and incredible views. The highlight of the trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210 meters). Watching the sunrise from here is a moment you won’t forget. The sky slowly lights up the snow-covered peaks of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) in golden and pink colors.

This trek is perfect for beginners, families, or anyone looking for a short and scenic adventure. The walking days are not too long, and the trail is well-marked and maintained, making it suitable even for those with no trekking experience. In spring, the rhododendron forests come alive with bright colors, and throughout the route, you will pass through Gurung and Magar villages that offer a glimpse into local life and culture.

The best times to do the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek are from September to mid-December and February to May, when the weather is clear and temperatures are ideal for walking. If you have extra days, you can also include a visit to Ghandruk, a beautiful village with more mountain views and cultural charm.

Though it’s a short trek, Ghorepani Poon Hill offers everything a trekker could hope for peaceful trails, breathtaking views, colorful forests, and friendly local communities. It’s the perfect choice if you want to experience the magic of the Himalayas and Nepali culture in a short and memorable journey.

What You will Experience During the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

From the moment you step onto the trail, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek welcomes you with a mix of peaceful nature, ever-changing landscapes, and warm local culture. Here’s what you will experience along the way.

A Walk through colorful forests

As you begin the trek, you will walk through gentle trails lined with small farms and terraced fields. Soon, you will enter beautiful forests filled with oak and pine trees. If you are trekking in spring, the rhododendrons are in full bloom, turning the forest into a sea of red, pink, and white. It feels peaceful, quiet, and fresh, like walking through a natural painting.

Climb stone steps with a view

One of the most memorable parts of the trek is the long staircase up to Ulleri. Yes, it’s a bit of a workout but the higher you go, the better the views get. You will see green valleys, scattered villages, and far-off mountain ridges as you climb.

Stay in traditional villages

Each evening, you will rest in charming mountain villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, or Ghandruk. These villages are home to the Gurung and Magar communities, and staying in local teahouses gives you a chance to experience daily life. You will enjoy warm meals, cozy beds, and quiet nights under the stars, often with beautiful mountain views right outside your window.

Catch the Sunrise at Poon Hill

The best part of the trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m). You’ll start before sunrise with a flashlight in hand. As you reach the top, the sky slowly lights up in orange and pink, and the snow-covered peaks begin to glow. From the viewpoint, you’ll see Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and many more peaks all around you. It’s quiet, cold, and absolutely magical.

Pass through peaceful mountain trails

After the sunrise, you will continue walking through forests, across small bridges, and along ridges with wide views. You may spot mountain birds or hear the sound of rivers far below. The trail feels calm and open, with plenty of moments to stop, breathe, and enjoy nature.

Meet Locals and Fellow Trekkers

Along the way, you will meet friendly villagers who greet you with a warm “Namaste”. You will also cross paths with other trekkers from around the world. Whether it’s over a cup of tea or during a lunch break, these moments often lead to simple conversations, shared stories, and new friendships.

A New View Every Day

One of the best things about this trek is how different each day feels. One day you’re walking through forests, the next through wide open hills or quiet villages filled with prayer flags and stone paths. The changing scenery keeps things fresh and exciting from start to finish

How difficult is the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek?

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is known as one of the easiest and most beginner-friendly treks in Nepal. You don’t need any prior trekking experience to complete it. The trail is well-marked, and most days involve 4 to 6 hours of walking, giving you plenty of time to take breaks, rest, and enjoy the trek.

That said, there are a few uphill sections that can be a bit challenging, especially the stone steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri. It might feel tough if you're not used to uphill walking, but you can always take your time. The mountain views along the way make the effort completely worth it.

The highest point of the trek is Poon Hill at 3,210 meters, which is not high enough to cause altitude problems for most people. Still, it’s best to walk slowly and stay hydrated. The route goes up and down gradually, which helps your body adjust as you go.

In short, this trek is a great choice for families, beginners, and anyone looking for a short and scenic Himalayan adventure. You will get stunning mountain views, experience village life, and enjoy nature, all without the need for long days at high altitude.

What is the total distance covered on the Ghorepani Poonhill Trek?

The total distance covered during the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is around 40 to 50 kilometers (25 to 31 miles), depending on the route you take. If your trek includes stops like Australian Camp, Landruk, Jhinu Danda, Chhomrong, and Ghandruk, the distance might be a little longer. On average, you will be walking about 5 to 6 hours a day, covering between 8 to 12 kilometers (5 to 7 miles) daily.

The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, passing through forests, stone-paved paths, gentle hills, and some steeper sections.

Daily Walking Hours and Trail Duration

Each day on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek usually involves 4 to 6 hours of walking, depending on your pace and that day’s route. Some days are easier and take you through quiet forests and small villages. Other days, like the climb to Ulleri or the early morning hike to Poon Hill, are a bit steeper and more challenging, but still doable at a relaxed pace.

You will have plenty of time to take breaks, enjoy tea stops, and snap photos along the way. Most trekkers begin walking after breakfast and reach the next village by early or mid-afternoon. This gives you time to relax, explore the area, or simply sit back and enjoy the mountain views from your teahouse.

The gentle pace and well-planned itinerary make this trek comfortable, even for beginners, and give your body enough time to adjust to the elevation changes.

Quick Note: Pikey Peak is another great short trek that offers an incredible experience. If you want a full comparison between both treks, check out our blog “Pikey Peak Trek vs Poon Hill: Which Short Trek is Better?”.

Useful InformationGood to Know

Accommodation Options Along the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Route

During the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, you will stay in local teahouses, which are small, family-run guesthouses found in every village along the trail. These teahouses offer basic but comfortable rooms, usually with two single beds, a mattress, blanket, and pillow. Most rooms are simple and clean, but don’t expect luxury, especially at higher altitudes.

Bathrooms are often shared, and hot showers are available in many places, usually for a small extra cost. Some teahouses also offer charging points for your phone or camera, and a common dining area where trekkers gather, eat, and relax by the fire.

Food is served fresh and hot, with a menu that includes dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, soups, pasta, and tea or coffee. The hospitality is warm, and the experience of staying in these teahouses adds a personal, local touch to your trek.

Meals and Food Availability During the Trek

No need to worry about food, you will be well taken care of during the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Every teahouse along the way has its own kitchen and serves a variety of simple but tasty meals.

One dish you will see everywhere is dal bhat, a classic Nepali meal with rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and sometimes a bit of curry or pickles on the side. It is fresh, filling, and gives you the energy you need for the day’s walk.

Other meal options include fried rice, noodles, pasta, soups, momos (dumplings), pancakes, eggs, and toast. Most teahouses have a fixed menu with both Nepali and basic Western food. For drinks, you can get tea, coffee, hot lemon, ginger honey tea, and bottled or boiled water.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are usually served at your teahouse. You will eat breakfast where you sleep, stop somewhere along the trail for lunch, and then have dinner after reaching your next destination. The food is simple but fresh and tasty, and you won’t need to carry any meals yourself unless you want snacks for the trail.

Mobile Network and ATM Access on the Trek

You will get mobile network in most parts of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, but it might not work well in some high or forested areas. Networks like NTC and Ncell usually work better than others, so it’s a good idea to buy a local SIM card in Kathmandu or Pokhara before you start the trek.

You will find better signal in places like Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk, but don’t expect strong internet everywhere. Some teahouses have Wi-Fi, but it may not be very fast and could cost a little extra.

There are no ATMs on the trail, so be sure to take out enough Nepali rupees in Pokhara or Kathmandu before you begin. It’s smart to carry enough cash for your food, rooms, hot showers, charging your phone, Wi-Fi, and maybe some snacks or tips during the trek.

Hot Showers and Charging Facilities in Teahouses

Most teahouses on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek have hot showers, but they are usually not included in the room price. You will need to pay a small extra fee, usually around Rs. 200 to Rs. 500, especially in higher places like Ghorepani or Tadapani. Some showers use gas, and others use solar power, so it might depend on the weather or time of day.

You can also charge your phone, camera, or power bank at most teahouses, but it may or may not be free. Charging usually costs between Rs. 100 to Rs. 300 per device, and you will find plugs either in your room or in the dining area. It is a smart idea to carry a power bank or solar charger, just in case.

Both hot showers and charging facilities are basic but enough to keep you clean and comfortable during the trek.

Add-On Options with Annapurna Base Camp or Mardi Himal Treks

If you have a little more time or want to explore further, you can easily combine the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with other popular routes like the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek or the Mardi Himal Trek.

After finishing the Poonhill part, many trekkers head towards Chhomrong, which is the gateway to Annapurna Base Camp. This extension adds a few more days to your journey and takes you closer to the big peaks like Annapurna I and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

Another great option is to connect the Poonhill route with the Mardi Himal Trek, known for its peaceful trails and stunning views of Machhapuchhre up close. Mardi Himal is quieter and feels more off-the-beaten-path, and it links well from places like Landruk or Ghandruk.

These add-on options let you experience even more of the Annapurna region, moving from forest trails to high mountain views. You can always adjust the route based on your time and what you want to see.

At Moon Himalaya Adventure, we offer these custom add-on options with your Poonhill trek. So if you're interested, feel free to Contact Us or WhatsApp us anytime.
