It takes you through Gokyo Valley, a quiet and less crowded route with amazing blue lakes, wide mountain views from Gokyo Ri, and Nepal’s biggest glacier, the Ngozumpa Glacier. Then you cross the high and icy Cho La Pass, which adds a real sense of adventure and challenge.

What makes this trek really stand out is that you get to visit both Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp in one trip. You will see different landscapes, explore remote Sherpa villages, visit ancient monasteries, and enjoy local culture and hospitality along the way. How difficult is the Cho La Pass Trek to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp?

The Cho La Pass Trek to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp is tough, but worth it. It is usually best for people who are fairly fit and have done some trekking before. The biggest challenge is the high altitude, you will be walking for several days above 4,000 meters, and the Cho La Pass, at 5,420 meters, can be steep, icy, and hard to cross. Some days involve 6 to 8 hours of walking on rocky and uneven trails, and the weather can change quickly, especially near the pass.

That said, many people complete this trek without needing any climbing experience. If you give yourself enough time to adjust to the altitude, follow a steady pace, and stay positive, it’s definitely doable. Training before your trip like hiking uphill or doing cardio can really help. For those who enjoy a challenge and want to see some of the most stunning views in the Everest region, this trek is absolutely worth it.

What is the highest altitude reached on the Cho La Pass Trek?

The highest point on the Cho La Pass Trek is Cho La Pass itself, which stands at 5,420 meters (17,782 feet) above sea level. This pass connects the Gokyo Valley with the Everest Base Camp trail and is one of the most exciting and toughest parts of the trek.

Crossing Cho La means hiking up steep, rocky paths and sometimes walking over snow or ice, especially in colder months. Some trekkers use microspikes or crampons for extra grip. Because of the high altitude, it’s really important to acclimatize properly and be physically prepared. While it’s a challenge, reaching the top of Cho La Pass is incredibly rewarding, with amazing views and a real sense of achievement.

Best Time to Do the Cho La Pass Trek to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp

The best time to do the Cho La Pass Trek to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp is in spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). These seasons offer the most stable weather and the clearest mountain views.

In spring, the trails are surrounded by blooming rhododendron forests, and the skies are usually clear perfect for seeing the stunning Himalayan peaks. The temperatures are comfortable during the day, though it can still get cold at night, especially at higher elevations.

Autumn is the most popular season for this trek. After the monsoon, the air is fresh and clean, giving you amazing visibility. The weather is dry, the paths are in great condition, and the views from spots like Gokyo Ri, Kala Patthar, and Everest Base Camp are truly unforgettable.

Trekking in winter (December to February) can be very cold, and the Cho La Pass might be covered in snow, making it difficult or even dangerous to cross. Monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain, making trails muddy and slippery, and cloud cover often hides the mountains. So for the best experience, stick to spring or autumn.

Necessary Permits Required for the Cho La Pass Trek with Gokyo and Everest Base Camp

To do the Cho La Pass Trek through Gokyo and Everest Base Camp, you will need two main permits before you hit the trail:

1. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

This permit lets you enter the Sagarmatha National Park, which covers the Everest region and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It costs around NPR 3,000 (about USD 25) for foreign travelers. You can get it either in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board or at the Monjo checkpoint on the way to Namche Bazaar.

2. Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

This local permit is needed to trek through villages like Lukla, Namche, and Dingboche. The fee is NPR 2,000 (about USD 17) and you can get it at Lukla or at the same Monjo checkpoint.

These permits are checked at various points, so keep them handy, along with a few passport-sized photos and photocopies of your passport. If you’re going with a trekking agency, they usually arrange all this for you.

📌Note: You no longer need the TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) for the Everest region.

For the latest updates or help with permits, it’s best to check with a trusted trekking company such as Moon Himalaya Adventure or the Nepal Tourism Board before your trip.

Major Destinations Covered During the Gokyo, Cho La Pass, and Everest Base Camp Trek

The Gokyo, Cho La Pass, and Everest Base Camp Trek takes you through some of the most beautiful and exciting places in the Everest region. This route gives you a perfect mix of peaceful lakes, high mountain passes, cultural villages, and stunning views of the world’s tallest peaks. Here are the major places you will get to explore along the way:

Gokyo Valley & Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo is a quiet and scenic valley known for its deep-blue glacial lakes sitting under the massive Cho Oyu (8,188m). You will also hike up Gokyo Ri (5,360m), one of the best spots to see Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and more all in one view.

Cho La Pass (5,420m)

This is one of the trek’s biggest adventures. Cho La Pass is a high mountain crossing between Gokyo and Everest Base Camp. It’s often covered in snow and can be tough to cross, but the views and sense of achievement make it totally worth it.

Everest Base Camp (5,364m)

This is the base of the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest (8,848.86m). Standing here feels like a huge achievement. You will see the Khumbu Icefall up close and be surrounded by some of the tallest peaks on Earth.

Kala Patthar (5,545m)

If you want the best view of Everest, this is the spot. An early morning hike to Kala Patthar gives you a jaw-dropping close-up of Everest, Nuptse, and Pumori. It’s a bit cold, but totally unforgettable.

Namche Bazaar

This lively Sherpa town is where most trekkers spend a day or two to get used to the altitude. You wil find cafes, shops, and even great views of Everest from the Everest View Hotel nearby.

Tengboche Monastery

A peaceful and spiritual stop, this famous Buddhist monastery offers incredible views of Ama Dablam and Everest. If you’re lucky, you can catch the monks during their daily chanting.

Sherpa Villages

You will walk through traditional villages like Phortse, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Dzongla, where you can see local Sherpa culture up close, friendly people, stone houses, and a slower pace of life that makes you feel truly connected to the mountains.

Food and Drinking Water Availability During the Cho La Pass Trek

During the Cho La Pass Trek to Gokyo and Everest Base Camp, you will find food and drinking water easily available all along the route, thanks to the many teahouses and lodges spread across the trail. These teahouses serve hot, homemade meals that are simple but filling just what your body needs after a long day of trekking.

You can expect dishes like dal bhat (rice with lentils and vegetables), noodles, fried rice, pasta, soups, momos, eggs, and even pancakes. As you climb higher, the variety may go down a bit and the prices go up, mostly because everything has to be carried up by porters or yaks.

For drinking water, you can buy bottled water at most stops, but it becomes more expensive at higher altitudes. To save money and avoid plastic waste, many trekkers carry water purification tablets or a portable filter. You can refill your bottles at local taps, streams, or directly from the teahouses. Some places also offer boiled water for a small extra fee.

Staying hydrated is super important, especially when you are walking at high altitudes, so try to drink regularly even if you don’t feel very thirsty. With just a bit of planning, you will be able to eat well and stay hydrated throughout the trek.
