What to expect during the Everest Base Camp trek 16 days?

Our Everest Base Camp trek 16 days, will push your limits and go beyond it. In the wilderness of the eastern Himalayas in Nepal, you will follow well-trodden trails and spend nights in picturesque Sherpa villages. You will be provided with best service during the Everest Base Camp trek. 

The Everest Base Camp trek 16 days starts with a short flight to Lukla (2,846 m/9,337 ft). Trek inside the Sagarmatha National Park and explore diverse climatic zones. Travel far away from the modern world, spending nights in beautiful mountain villages and crossing numerous thrilling suspension bridges.

The trail will take you to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,290 ft). To make our Everest Base Camp trek itinerary a bit more doable and different, we have kept ascent to Phortse (3,950 m/12,959 ft) from Namche Bazaar. From here, you will continue to Dingboche (4,410 m/14,470 ft) and follow a much more rugged and steep path.

Trek along the Khumbu Glacier and ascend to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft), passing by Lobuche village (4,940 m/16,210 ft) and Gorak Shep (5,164 m/16,942 ft). The final ascent is to Kala Patthar (5,545 m/18,192 ft), and then, you will descend to Pheriche (4,371 m/14,340 ft) for the night stay.

From here, trek past Tengboche village (3,860 m/12,660 ft) and retrace the route back to Lukla. The landscapes change with the change in altitude. Lush forests and verdant valleys turn to barren hills and glacier moraines.

As the trek progresses, you will witness views of Mt. Thamserku (6,608 m/21,680 ft), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m/27,940 ft), Mt. Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft), Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft), Mt. Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), and numerous others.

How to prepare for the Everest Base Camp trekking?

Upon your arrival, representative from Moon Himalaya Adventure will be at Tribhuvan International airport to receive you and will transfer you to Hotel. In the evening, detail information regarding the trek will be briefly described. Your gear and equipment will be checked.

On second day after having your breakfast our guide will brief you about the Everest base camp trek and cross check the required gears you need for Everest Base camp trek. In case if you miss out some gear you can buy or rent it. If you want then you can visit around the world heritage sites (Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bouddhanath, Pashupatinath, Swoyambhunath) but you have to pay entry fees on your own.

Early morning we take flight to Lukla which is gateway to Mt. Everest. 30 minutes long flight will be the thrilling and adventurous experience to start your trek to EBC. After reaching Lukla you will be introduced with porters and will head to Phakding.

After having your breakfast at Phakding you will start your hike. On your way to Namche you will cross suspension bridges and hike up observing the beautiful view. Monjo is an entrance gate to Sagarmatha National Park where your permits will be checked. Monjo is a sherpa village which offers you a beautiful landscape view.

The walk for this day concludes reaching Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazar, one of the beautiful villages in the Khumbu region offers you the attractive Mountain View.

The must needed acclimatization day in Namche even if you feel healthy and fit. You will hike up to Everest view point on this day. Magnificent panoramic view of Mountains like Mount Everest (8,848.86 m), Lhotse (8,516m), Nuptse (7,861m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), Kangtega (6,782m), Thamserku (6,623m), Kwangde (6,011m) and others can be seen from Everest view point. 

Acclimatization is done so that your body can adapt to new environment. Also it helps you to prevent from altitude sickness.

You will start trek after having breakfast. Walking through the dense rhododendron forest you will be both descending and ascending on your way to Phortse. The trail follows beneath the splendid Mt. Everest, Mt. Amadablam, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Nuptse and many others. The destination for today ends reaching Phortse.

Waking up with the beautiful sunrise view and having breakfast observing the stunning view from Phortse will increase your thirst to reach Everest Base camp even more. Crossing the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola then climbing uphill till you reach the beautiful sherpa village, Pangboche where you will rest for your lunch. After that your journey continues to reach Dingboche. On your way you will be amazed as you will see the prayers flag dangled in the trails and colourful Mani stones imprinted with the buddhist mantras. Dingboche is a traditional sherpa village with a beautiful view from surrounding hills.

As you are now at 4410 m altitude your body needs to adopt the environment to move further in higher elevation in order to prevent from ALtitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). On this day you hike up to Nagarjun hill where you witness the breathing view of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Lobuche, and Taboche. Beside Mountains you can observe the scenic view of the entire Imja Khola Valley. If you don’t want to hike then you can simply roam around the Guesthouses, Bakery and cafe of Dingboche.

Your hike starts after having breakfast in Dingboche. You will feel the changes in your trail as you will encounter the grassland mountain ecosystem. From the top of Thokla you will see breathtaking scenery. You will also see the Chortens (Memorial stone) and prayer flags made in the memory of the deceased climbers. Finally reaching Lobuje, your guide will brief for your next day trek to Everest base camp.

The most awaited day of the whole trek.You will have more motivation on this day as you will be reaching the base of the world’s highest mountain. Today it would be quite challenging as you will be starting your trek early in the morning. You will stop for lunch at the gorak shep.

After gorak shep you will continue the trek to base camp where you will observe the elegant Khumbu glacier and Khumbu Icefall. Finally a great achievement of trek will conquer reaching the Everest Base camp. In addition, the beautiful snowcapped mountain around the base camp is just jaw dropping. Spending some time at base camp then you will descend to gorak shep at your lodge.

Reaching the Everest base camp is not the end of the trek. In the early morning you will hike up to Kala Patthar, the highest point of the trek to see the beautiful sunrise view. You will be amazed seeing the rays of sun touching the mountains of himalayas. The best panoramic view of the himalayas is observed from this view point. After filling your eyes, mind and heart with the splendid scenic view of himalaya you will descend back to Gorakh shep for your breakfast.

The most notable ascent for the day is Pheriche Pass. Great views of rivers and Mountains can be seen on your way to Pheriche.

The route to Tengboche is easy with beautiful views on its way.Tengboche can be less called Village as it is surrounded by the guest houses. Tengboche Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Khumbu region and is a very important sacred place. Evening rituals are performed by the Monks in Tengboche Monastery. Everyone can take part in the prayer however you are not allowed to take photos and videos.

You can enjoy beautiful sunrise view from tengboche along with having your breakfast at side. After having breakfast and packing our bags we will descend down to Monjo after spending some time at Namche.

This day might be a little long so it’s better to start your trek a little early. Walking down to Lukla you will remember your first day of the trek and find how much you have accomplished. Not only reached the base of the world’s highest mountain but also you returned safely. Though you will be walking the same path but you find the difference the way you feel. You will start memorizing the whole trek on your way back as today it is the last walk of the trek. As to cherish your success you can sing, dance and have fun time with the guides and porters at Lukla in the evening.

Finally, the last day of the trek, your final breakfast of the trek at Khumbu region. Catching the early flight you will return to Kathmandu, capital city of Nepal. During your flight now you will be able to recognise the peaks of the Himalayas. Upon your arrival at Kathmandu our guides will transfer you to a hotel from the domestic airport.

    Everest Base Camp trek difficulty & altitude sickness

    As per Himalayan standards, the Everest Base Camp trek is considered a moderate/difficult trek. This is known as a beginner-friendly trek, and our 16 days itinerary makes it much more manageable. During the trek, you will come across varying terrains, climates, and elevations. This is what adds up to the difficulty of the EBC trek in Nepal.

    If you are physically and mentally prepared for the journey, it is not that tough to complete the Everest Base Camp trek. Moreover, following our itinerary, you will get ample time to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is a common illness that trekkers suffer during trekking in Nepal. It is easily treatable and avoidable.

    If you see the below symptoms, inform your guide and take the necessary first aid:

    • Persistent headache
    • Difficulty in breathing
    • Vomiting
    • Insomnia
    • Loss of appetite
    • Nausea

    To avoid altitude sickness during Everest Base Camp trekking, follow the below measures:

    • Drink plenty of water and other fluids to keep yourself hydrated. Aim to drink at least 2 liters of water every day during the trek. A dehydrated body is much more prone to altitude sickness.
    • Do not drink alcohol or smoke, as they dehydrate your body.
    • Maintain your pace, and do not rush. Take your time to enjoy the surroundings.
    • Have a balanced diet. Include crab, protein, fat, etc, to keep yourself energized throughout the journey.
    • Get plenty of rest and sleep enough.

    The best month to do the Everest Base Camp trek

    The best months to do the Everest Base Camp trek are March, April, May, September, October, and November. These months are from the spring and autumn seasons. Spring and autumn are the peak trekking seasons in the Himalayas. You will get stable weather, clear days, and a moderate climate in these two seasons, which are essential for the EBC trek.

    Likewise, summer/monsoon (June, July, August) and winter (December, January, February) are off-seasons for Everest Base Camp trekking. It means the weather, climate, and trail conditions are not good in these two seasons. You will come across added challenges like unclear views, rainfall, snowfall, closed trails, etc, in these two seasons.

    Accommodation and meals

    In Kathmandu, you will spend nights in tourist standard hotels as per our Everest Base Camp trek itinerary. During the trek, you will spend nights in lodges. We will book you basic but comfortable and safe lodges to spend the nights along the trekking route. You will get twin shared rooms and washrooms can be private or shared.

    The basic lodges do not offer many services at room cost. Things like charging, WiFi, and hot showers may cost you an additional few bucks that are not covered in our package cost. Likewise, we provide three meals during the trek, and all the meals are given as per the menu of the lodges.

    The menu has dishes like rice and curries, fried rice, thali set (dal bhat), chapati, dhido, Tibetan bread, stir-fried vegetables, momo, noodles, pasta, steak, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, porridge, soups, pancakes, pies, toast, oat, eggs, sausage, thukpa, thenduk, Sherpa stew, etc.

    While in Kathmandu, you will get all breakfasts as per the itinerary and two complimentary dinners. You have to manage other meals by yourself. Similarly, you will get boiled drinking water in all lodges along the trail. Buy snacks, nuts, and protein bars in Kathmandu for the journey.

    Everest Base Camp trek travel insurance

    To join the Everest Base Camp trek 16 days, you have to buy travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation. As the Khumbu region does not have decent health infrastructure and there are no roadways for quick transportation in case of emergency, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation is very important.

    Guide and porter during the EBC trek

    During the EBC trek, our experienced and English-speaking guide will accompany you. Moreover, we can also arrange a guide who can speak in your comfortable language for the journey. You will trek with a friendly, reliable, and expert mountain guide. He will assure your safety during the trek, make the journey hassle-free for you, and help you interact with the locals.

    Likewise, you will also get a porter who will carry your heavy duffel bag throughout the trek. Both guide and porter will be natives of the Khumbu region. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them, as they are your travel buddies. We have a tipping custom in Nepal. If you like the service provided by our guide and porter, feel free to tip them at the end of the trek.

    Everest Base Camp trek 2024 last-minute booking and cancellation

    To book the Everest Base Camp trek 16 days at the last minute, you have to make full payment for the package, which is non-refundable. Last-minute bookings are only available if you contact us at least one week before the trek departure date. You have to be present in Kathmandu at least one day before your flight to Lukla.

    Likewise, if you are already in Kathmandu and wish to join our Everest Base Camp trek, contact us or visit our office. We only recommend joining the Everest trek at the last minute to trekkers who have previous trekking experience and are fit enough because you will have no time to prepare for the trek.

    Below is our cancellation guideline for the Everest Base Camp trek 2024:

    • We need 25% of the Everest Base Camp trek package cost as a booking deposit. It is used to make the necessary reservations and is not refundable. You can make the due payment upon arriving in Kathmandu before the trek starts.
    • If you cancel the trip 56 days or more before the departure date, the cancellation charge is 25% of the total cost.
    • If you cancel the trip between 42 days to 55 days before the departure date, the cancellation charge is 50% of the total cost.
    • If you cancel the trip between 35 days to 41 days before the departure date, the cancellation charge is 75% of the total cost.
    • If you cancel the trip between 1 day to 34 days before the departure date, the cancellation charge is 100% of the total cost.

    • During the Everest Base Camp trek, you will be trekking for 5 to 6 hours on average. Likewise, on average, you will cover 8 to 11 kilometers.

    • Yes, lodges along the Everest Base Camp trail offer a paid charging facility where you can charge your devices. It may cost you USD 2 to 3 to charge your device every time. Power bank and spare batteries are highly recommended. As it is a long trek, we also advise getting a solar charger.

    • During the Everest Base Camp trek, you will come across various climatic zones and elevations, which result in diverse weather. The upper part of the trail is dry and colder than the lower part of the trail. The daytime is usually warm and sunny, however morning and night are a bit cold.

    • Each trekker has a 5 kg baggage limit for the Lukla flight, so your backpack shouldn't go beyond this number. Likewise, the duffel bag weight limit for each trekker is 10 kg.

    • From Kathmandu, it takes 35 minutes to reach Lukla on a commercial flight. Likewise, a helicopter flight takes 45 minutes.

    • You can obtain a tourist visa for the Everest Base Camp trek from the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate Office in your country. Likewise, you can also apply for an on-arrival visa and get it upon landing in Kathmandu.

    • Everest Base Camp trek cost depends on the itinerary, services included in the package, group size, and time of the year you are doing it.

    • It depends from person to person. If you are following the precautions and acclimatizing well, then there is a high chance you will not get altitude sickness during this trek.

    • Yes, travel insurance is necessary for the Everest Base Camp trek. You cannot join this trek without travel insurance, and it must cover emergency air evacuation.

    • There is no preferred age to do the Everest Base Camp trek. Anyone can do this trek if they are physically and mentally fit for the journey. Underage trekkers can do EBC trek with an identified guardian. There is a record of doing Everest Base Camp trek by two years old baby under constant supervision of his parents. 

    • For the Everest Base Camp trek, you can do strength training along with cardiovascular training. You have to build your stamina, endurance, and long walking habits. You can go to the gym for strength training and do activities like running, swimming, cycling, jogging, etc, to increase your stamina.

    • The cost of the trek depends on the itinerary, the season, types of lodge, mode of transportation and other moderating factors.

    • Yes, altitude sickness is a concern on Everest Base Camp Trek, as the trek involves hiking at high elevation. Knowing the signs of altitude sickness and taking the necessary steps to acclimate is very important. You should get down to a lower altitude and get medical help if you start feeling sick or dizzy at a higher elevation. At Moon Himalaya Adventure we plan itinerary with proper accilimatization day. 

       

    • Throughout the Everest Base Camp trek you will find teahouse accomodation. However during peak season of trekking it is highly recommended to book the room beforehand. At Moon Himalaya Adventure we make proper booking pre hand so that there won't arise any issues regarding the accomodation. 

    • A trekkers' must get Sagarmatha National Park permit, Pasang Lhamu Gaupalika entry fee and a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card to do the Everest Base Camp Trek.

    • From 1st April, 2023 it is compulsory to hire a guide however in Everest region you can still do the trek without guide but hiring a guide is recommended for safety reasons and to enhance the overall experience. Guide knows well about the Everest region and hiring a guide will be very helpful with the routes, regarding the information about the local culture and help with the issues that may arise during the trek. 

       

    • The Everest Base Camp Trek is considered a challenging trek the trek goes steep ascent and descent at high altitude. It is important to have a good level of fitness and to prepare well before undertaking the trek. With proper preparedness and accilimatization you can complete the Everest base camp trek successfully. Guides at Moon Himalaya adventure have years of experience so they will make your trip easier for you as far as possible.

    • The best time to do Everest Base Camp trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is generally dry and clear. However, weather conditions is unpredictable in the mountains, so it is important to be prepared for all types of weather.

    • Our Everest Base Camp trek itinerary is 16 days long. However, you can also do this trek in 15 days, 14 days, and 12 days. Let us know if you want to customize the itinerary.
